The key overall impact of these marquetry art creations lies in Charlotte’s capturing the endless aspects of “light” through the full day/night cycle. Whether this light is depicted in the classical forms often viewed in the sky, or within the refraction and reflection in and on the surface of the waters, she expresses how it moves and rests in shadow and near darkness. Of note is how she has chosen to depict the majority of the loons swimming all in the same direction (possibly east to west) when portrayed in a nature ‘setting’, but the several pieces that are a “close-up” of this world, Charlotte has them reversing course, and swimming (west to east) from where they have come from in the other settings. By studying these “lone pieces” it drives the viewer back to observe more carefully the countless details of the individual loons illustrated in their natural habitats.  The flow from left to right is always such a strong impact for the eye, with the western world having trained their eyes instinctively to move left to right through the mechanics of reading and writing language. This said, she has also found a way of exemplifying the light theme with the “light” of colour(s)… this is where this artist’s art work goes into a whole other level of talent and expertise … literally using the natural ‘paint’ colours of her skillfully selected wood materials, mixing them, and creating magic on a white canvas.

Charlotte has certainly revealed the many facets of light, but there is also a sense of smell (with the detail of maple and arbutus leaves); the sense of temperature (heat of the day, and cool of the night); and finally, the auditory tranquility of overall stillness. In this stillness there is movement of water through the grain patterns in the wood. The seamless connection from sky to water, water to sky, land to sky, sky to land … all within reflection, air flow, and the time of day/night.
